Assessment Design and Sample

CWRA+ (College and Work Readiness Assessment) is a performance assessment for learning that directly assesses students’ critical-thinking, problem-solving, data-literacy, and written-communication skills.

Using a performance-task approach for both middle and high school students, CWRA+ assesses a subset of critical-thinking and written-communication skills. Results are generally available within four to six weeks of the submission of registrar data. Accommodations may be made for students with individualized education plans (IEPs).

What is being assessed and reported?
The CWRA+ Performance Task asks students to use critical-thinking skills, such as synthesizing, evaluating, and analyzing information from reference documents. CWRA+ differs from many assessment types in that it requires complex and sophisticated thought processes, and there may be more than one correct answer.

We provide a total CWRA+ score as well as a set of three subscores each for the Performance Task and the Selected-Response Questions section that measure the following skills:

Performance Task (60 minutes)

  • Analysis and Problem Solving
  • Writing Effectiveness
  • Writing Mechanics

Selected-Response Questions (30 minutes)

  • Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning
  • Critical Reading and Evaluation
  • Critique an Argument

Trained scorers use a rubric to score student responses.

Assessment Design
CWRA+ design is built on years of research about the most effective ways to assess competencies. Background information, published briefs, articles, and white papers on CWRA+ can be found in Resources for CWRA+

You can download a sample of the High School CWRA+ assessment or contact CAE to experience the assessment on the same online platform students use to take CWRA+.
